JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Authorities are investigating the death of an off-duty Jersey City police officer who died from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Hudson County prosecutors say 32-year-old Ramon Torres was found around 8 p.m. Sunday in his Jersey City home by officers responding to a reported shooting at the residence. He apparently had been shot in the torso and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Prosecutors said Monday that the cause and manner of death remains under investigation. They declined further comment.

Dozens of police officers gathered outside the hospital’s emergency entrance following the shooting.

Torres had graduated from the police academy about a year ago.
